Hiking
to the Huequi Lagoon
Season: October to April
Difficulty / level of fitness: moderate
Description:
We
first drive for 8,3 km (5 miles) to the bridge over Huequi river,
where we will take an old trail along river banks, used by the mules which
goes through green, leafy forest. The river, alternating between
rapids and pools, reflects in its waters the vegetation appearing and
disappearing on our sight as we advance. Finally we reach the northern
bank of the beautiful Huequi lagoon, surrounded by wide medows, woods
and hills. We can visit "El Potrero", a cattle gathering outpost and
shelter for the mules transports. We lunch there while we enjoy sightseeing,
where we can see the cattle grazing and different birds, such as black-necked
swans, caiquenes and ducks. In the afternoon we return through the
same trail to the lodge.

Trekking
to to the heart of Huequi Peninsula, Patagonia Chile
Season: November to April (weather
permitting, only with good weather conditions)
Difficulty / level of fitness: high
Duration: 3 to 4 days
Description:
Day 1:
We
first drive for 8,3 km (5 miles) to the bridge over Huequi river,
where we pack up the horses to transport the heavier equipment. Here we
can decide if we want to go hiking or horseback riding to the Huequi lagoon,
the first section of the trail. First, we'll go to the Rivera (North)
of Huequi Lagoon and we continue trekking to a Tepú Forest, for there
to "Curanipe area". Detouring to the East we reach "Carpa Vieja
area" where we cross Huequi River.
Then
going through the forest we arrive to a wide flat area that villagers
call "la Cancha" (soccer court). From here we see the forest and
old Huequi River courses which will lead us to the Huequi River again.
We cross the river to finally reach the great "Capichañe waterfall".
From here gets bigger and then we can see a large valley running between
a majestic chain of mountains with a lot of vegetation which at times
gets closer. As we continue our way it will be necessary to cross river
several times.
From
Capichañe waterfall the trail gets more difficult and the horses can not
continue, so we have to carry in our backpacks all the equipment,
beginning here the second section of our trekking. It is necessary to
cross the river twice, and finally, we go by East river with low vegetation
shrub type, until we arrive to the majestic waterfall "La Gruta",
the shortest section of the long Huequi River, and this is forms a narrow
waterway, where the waterfall begins. Right above the waterfall, at its
beginning, it is the Huequi Volcano.
We
camp in this place, we can take a rest and plan our next day.
Day 2:
a) Trekking to Alerce Forest and Thermal hot springs.
b) Ascent to Huequi Volcano (optional)
a) Trekking to Alerce Forests and Thermal hot springs. After breakfast,
we begin ascending around the river and Huequi Volcano heading South.
The
Valley gets even narrower, having on one side Huequi volcano wall and
on the other side a chain of mountains. By the riverside we can see
many different hot springs natural ponds, with curious forms and colors.
We finish the trekking at an Alerce Forest. We then return to the camp
(same as previous day), taking a rest, dinner and lodging.
[Alerce (Fitzroya cupressoides) The alerce is unique to
the temperate rainforests of southern
Chile and western Argentina.
Sometimes called "the redwood of South America"]
